Images for Websites
Images help make a website interesting, but don't add too many images because they can be distracting and take too long to download.
HTML uses images in the format or extension of the following:
- jpg or jpeg - (Joint Photographic Experts Group) - a form of compression that allows for the best quality. When you save a file for the web in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, as a jpg, a 1 mb image can be reduced to 100kb will almost the same quality and resolution.
- gif - (Graphics Interchange Format) - used for flat color graphics and has tremendous compression rate. It is a good choice for graphics such as icons, buttons, or directional arrows. It can be used for simple animation programs. Gif files can have a transparent background.
- png - Portable Network Graphics - have the advantage of variable transparency. They are larger than jpg.
- svg - Scalable Vector Graphics - a vector file format used by XML (Extensible Markup Language).
These are forms of compression that allow a browser to access an image. The higher the resolution the longer the download time for your web page visitors. Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator will indicate in the Save for Web window what the download time will be for different connection speeds.
