Free WiFi Risks

Free WiFi internet access or wireless hotspot are convenient but they can be risky. If you are just searching the web, you are probably okay. A problem can occur if you are entering login and password information to login to specific websites, email accounts, online banking, Facebook, etc. Hackers can EASILY capture your information / data. Information that you send over the wireless network at the hot spot may be open for any hacker to see.

Hackers use hacking software and only need to be near the wireless hotspot to intercept the data being passed. Some hackers set up their own wireless network and name it something similar to what the business is offering hoping that you will see their wireless connection and use it.

Beware if you are using a free wireless signal!

Solutions to Limit Your Risks

There is no way to completely eliminate the risks that hackers may develop since new schemes are being developed daily.

  • Ask businesses for an encrypted connection. They would have to give out individual userid and password to each customer.
  • Do NOT use public WiFi internet access for ANYTHING that requires you to enter a user name and password. For example: Don’t purchase ANYTHING online or use email while using a public wireless hotspot.
  • Make sure your computer's security includes a personal firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware software and that everything is turned on. File sharing should be turned off. These precautions will not protect the data you send, but it may keep someone from access files directly on your computer.
  • Don't connect to any wireless access that you do not know whose it is. Make sure the wireless hotspot you connect to is the one actually being offered by the restaurant, hotel, etc.
  • Use an Ethernet cable to connect instead of wireless access.
  • Use your smart phone for Online Banking and Facebook.
  • Use a mobile internet access provided by your cell phone company. For example: 3G and 4G (WiMax) provide decent to great internet speeds and protected access.
  • Use websites that have Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). You can tell if the website URL starts with HTTPS://. Secure Shell (SSH) can be used for command line and file transfer and virtual public network (VPN) software for remote connections to corporate networks all protect the data.
