Images - Best Practices
- Do not embed text inside Images - Search engines cannot read text embedded in images. Keep the text in HTML if you want search engines to understand your content.
- File Names - Give your images detailed, informative filenames to give Search Engines information about the subject matter of the image. Descriptive images names also make it easier for the webmaster to work with the files. For example: asafer_logo.jpg is a lot more meaningful then IMG0000157.jpg.
- Include alt text - The alt attribute describes the content of an image file and is used by visual impaired, people using screen readers, or who have low-bandwidth connections. Any one who may not be able to see images on web pages. Focus on creating useful, information-rich content that uses keywords appropriately and in context. Test your content by using a text-only browser such as Lynx.
For Example:
<img src="asafer_logo.jpg" alt="A
Safer Company Logo">
- Content - The content around the image (including any captions or image titles), provide search engines with important information about the subject matter of your image.
- Place images near the relevant text
- Provide good, descriptive titles and captions for your images.
- Use only Good Quality photos
- Placement of Images - Put images at the top of the page where they can be immediately seen. Not all users scroll to the bottom of a page.
- Structuring your directories so that similar images are saved together
- File Size - Specify a width and height for all images. Specifying width and height can speed up page loading
- Protect your images - Provide as much information as possible about your images to help Search Engines identify if someone has copied your image.
- Bandwidth - prevent people from using your bandwidth by preventing users from using your images on their site or linking to your images. Just remember you could be limiting the potential audience for your images and reducing search engines access.
- Robots.txt - Use robots.txt file to block access to your images if you do not want search engines to crawl your images.
