Videos for Websites

Video technology has become affordable and allows us to make videos, manipulate it and create high-quality movies. Video cameras are everywhere and digital video (DV) is a standard format. It is fun to add videos to your website but remember that video should only be used where it is appropriate and the best way to convey the concept or achieve the desire effect. Video can be used to:

  • stimulate emotions
  • convey messages
  • provide instructions
  • demonstrate techniques
  • relate experiences

Video Guidelines

  • Make sure the sound complements the video
  • Use high quality video footage that looks professional
  • Do not overuse transitions
  • Trim excessive or boring footage

Video is made up of images that are combined to convey a message and to communicate a motion and sound. Just remember that videos can have a large file size and use a lot of bandwidth when they are played.

Consider Alternatives

Animation or still images with sound can provide smaller file sizes and quicker download times.

Video and Audio File Formats

The format defines how the video and audio streams are compressed, and how the two streams are packed in a single file. A format's quality-to-filesize performance is important. Its support across devices too, especially given the recent rise of mobile devices (iPhone, Android) with video capabilities.
