Stop Unnecessary Start-Up Programs

Stop programs from running at start-up that you do not use.

  2. Start up

  5. Click the programs that you do not want to start at startup.
  6. These programs you should not remove from Startup:

  7. How to Automate the Disk Cleanup Tool in Windows XP

Disk Cleanup

Disk Cleanup checks for unnecessary programs, and temporary Internet files. Run Disk Cleanup at least once a month.

    1. Close all programs that are running including background programs and screensavers.
    2. With Microsoft Windows XP, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and Disk Cleanup
    3. Or you may schedule it to run
      • First set up the types of files you want to delete: Go to Start > Run > type cleanmgr /sageset:50 and click OK

Note: /sageset: n - displays the Disk Cleanup Settings dialog box and creates a registry key to store the settings selected.. The n value, which is stored in the registry, allows you to specify tasks for Disk Cleanup to run. The n value can be any integer 0 to 65535. To have all of the options available when you use the /sageset option, you might need to specify the drive where windows is installed. This should make your settings, look up the registry key and take over the SAGESET number from here into the command-line.

Check the files that you wish to be deleted. Personally, I do not deleted the Office Set up files.
      • Add a Scheduled Tasks to Cleanup

Go to Start >Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks > Add Scheduled Task > the Scheduled Task Wizard will appear, click Next. Scroll down and select Disk Cleanup. I'd recommend performing this task: Daily.
      • Disk Cleanulp
      • The Run option must have C:\WINDOWS\system32\cleanmgr.exe /sagerun:50

Note: /sagerun: n - runs the specified tasks that are assigned to the n value if you use the \sageset option. All drives on the computer are enumerated and the selected profile runs against each drive.

Disk Defragmenter

Using Disk Defragmenter is simple but reliable program. Depending on the size of your hard drive it may take a couple of hours to complete.

  1. Close all programs that are running including background programs and screensavers.
  2. With Microsoft Windows XP, click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and Disk Defragmenter. Monitor the hard drive fragmentation ratio weekly and defrag with it reached more than 10%.
  3. Disk Fragmenter
  4. Click the Defragment Button.
  5. NOTE: If Disk Defragmenter starts itself over and over, then a hidden background program is still accessing the hard drive. Restart the computer in Safe mode and try again.

Disk Error Checking in Windows XP

  1. Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the hard disk that you want to check.
  2. Click Properties, and then click Tools.
  3. Under Error-checking, click Check Now. A dialog box that shows the Check disk options is displayed,
  4. Use one of the following procedures:
    • To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, click Start.
    • To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, select the Automatically fix file system errors check box, and then click Start.
    • To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable information, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:
The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk. These files can be accessed by restarting Windows. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer?
Click Yes to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.
The following table lists the exit codes that Chkdsk reports after it has finished:
Collapse this tableExpand this table
