Search Engine Ranking Mistakes

Why do competitors rank higher in search results than your business does? Check to see if your website has one or more of these common mistakes.

Common Mistakes

Many websites over look the obvious information.

  1. Location of your business including city, state and even your neighborhood should be in text on every page; especially your home page.
  2. Not including Local Phone Number: many businesses only include their toll-free number. Also include a local number.
  3. Misspellings: Make sure you spell each word correctly.
Example: If "attorney" becomes "attroney" or "Chicago" becomes "Chigago" search engines will not find you.
  4. Leaving key words out: If you are a plumber for example, make sure you include a variety of keywords that people could use to find you. So in addition to using the word plumber, it would be good to mention leaky pipes, clogged drains, and other terms that people may use when they are in need of plumbing services. Think about your own business, and what others might search for if they are looking for your type of business.
  5. Not using your company name: Check your web text and make sure that your company name appears on every page and in every title. It should also be in bold.
  6. Not describing specifically what you do: use all the words and/or phrases that describe your business throughout your website. Also consider what your customers call your type of business and how they might classify your business.
  7. Not getting the most from your page tags. To create more searchable tags, include your company name or the problem you solve, your location and specific words about the content on each page.
