FTP

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and it allows you to transfer files from your computer to and from your web hosting site.

Internet Explorer can be used to FTP files to a web hosting server.

The editor that you are using usually has ftp capabilities too. You can ftp files through Adobe Dreamweaver or Crimson Editor.

Many of the FTP programs are editors that also allow you to ftp your code to your web hosting. Many are free.

Once you download the FTP program, you must know the following information:

  • ftp URL
  • Username
  • Password

Most FTP programs have two windows: one is your computer and the other is your web hosting area. Many web hosting servers have a root directory called public_html or www or httpdocs.
